Many Rural Women Give Birth Without Skilled Help

By Joy Ojochogwu Etubi | Project Leader

Dear Donors,

We sincerely thank the donors who have supported the Train 50 Midwives to Serve 2000 Disadvantaged Moms project. Your generosity shows concern for mothers who face serious risks during pregnancy and childbirth. At present, however, the funds received are still not sufficient to begin the planned training sessions for midwives.

Across many rural communities in Nigeria, women often give birth at home without trained medical support. In some areas, skilled midwives are few or located far from the villages where pregnant women live. When labor complications occur, families may not have access to someone with the training needed to respond quickly.

Without skilled assistance, childbirth can become dangerous. Conditions such as severe bleeding, infection, or prolonged labor can place both mothers and babies at risk. Many of these complications can be managed or prevented when trained birth attendants are present during delivery and provide proper care afterward.

This project will train 50 midwives to provide safe childbirth care and maternal health education. The training will focus on safe delivery practices, hygiene, early warning signs during pregnancy and labor, and care for mothers and newborns after birth. Practical demonstrations and simple tools will help participants build confidence in responding to emergencies.

After completing the training, the midwives will return to their communities and support approximately 2,000 pregnant women and new mothers. They will assist with safe deliveries, monitor recovery after childbirth, and share basic health guidance with families.

We are grateful for the support already received and for the compassion shown toward mothers in underserved communities. Your encouragement strengthens our commitment to improving safe childbirth care. We warmly welcome others who may wish to join this effort so that these midwives can soon begin serving the women who need them most.

Sincerely,

Joy Ojochogwu Etubi
