Training in Tree Domestication

Summary

This project will start with a theoretical training of community members in biodiversity conservation and environmental education focused on how to practice tree domestication and agroforestry in their farms and surrounding rain forest. The community members will be carefully trained on techniques of grafting, marcotting, cuttings and buddings of specific plants of high economic value and also on those of high conservation values to revamp the biodiversity status of the tropical rain forest.

Challenge

I have widely publicized the great necessity for this project as a major hope to save the rich tropical rain forest which is the only coastal rain forest found between Douala and Limbe. These forest is one of high conservation value certified by FSC. The increase in economic crisis, lack of skillfully/state payable jobs, frustration and hopelessness among the needy and active population of young people has increase the pressure on the forest. Many has turned to the adjacent forest for survival.

Solution

Tree domestication and agroforestry practice will sharply divert the mind of forest exploiters to a more economically value project like this. More over the project will go further to encourage transformation of NTFPs that are abundant in the CF. Fast growing fruit trees from domesticated seedlings that will produce economic fruit trees within short period will yield a lot of money to alleviate poverty among the community members. Also we will engage them to do tree planting in the forest.

Long-Term Impact

Tthe interesting participants that will take this training serious and embark on the exercise will realize lot of profit in the near future. We shall teach them how to grow marcotted or grafted seedlings of citrus plants, Mango, Plum, Avocado, Bush Mango, Kola nuts, Bush pepper and apples. A mango tree with a bumper harvest in a season can raise 400000 frs CFA to 500000 frs CFA. Bush pepper and Bush mango makes twice this sum as a result of their medicinal value in addition to nutritional one.
