Summary

This project will give the community health centre in the village of Terrat the resources to better provide critical health services to the >20,000 rural population who depend on it. Especially to enable the staff to respond to any local effects and changes from the ongoing global pandemic, and support the clinic with electricity. To provide up-to-date Maasai language health info to the population, we will also support the operation of the community radio station, enabling them to stay on air.

Challenge

More than 14,500 patients a year rely on the services of the Terrat Clinic in the Maasai Plains of Tanzania. It is the only health facility for miles around. But a lack of electricity and equipment limits what the dedicated medical staff can achieve for their patients. And in the current COVID crisis, the clinic is desperately short of the tools it needs to be able to treat patients and ensure the safety of the staff. There is also shortage of information on COVID, especially in Maasai language.

Solution

This project will provide the short-term protective equiment and patient facilities that the clinic needs to operate safely and effectively during the ongoing COVID pandemic, as well as additional resources the staff need to more effectively help patients beyond the crisis. And the community radio station broadcasts daily updates and advice on COVID, in Maasai as well as Swahili. This project will provide them with the generator fuel to remain on air. We also want to provide power to the clinic.

Long-Term Impact

The project will allow a higher standard of healthcare to be delivered to the whole subdistrict which relies on the Terrat Clinic. This will allow the clinic to deliver effective and high quality healthcare to more patients, especially during the COVID pandemic. Providing high quality COVID information to the whole region via the radio will also contribute to to better patient outcomes, and decrease the impact of COVID on the community. This improves long-term health, livelihoods and wellbeing.
