Transforming Lives Through Training

This trimester Bio-Benin is focussing on teaching apprentices good hygiene habits to ensure that our kitchen and brewery are kept spotlessly clean.

"It's essential that apprentices wash their hands frequently and keep the floors clean, even wear masks in the brewery  if we want to produce a good-tasting, healthy product" says Guillaume Lonhoudjo, our Executive Director. 

Many students grew up without running water in their homes. They were also accustomed to using a latrine, rather than a flush toilet, so coming to Natitingou from a small, isolated village, is a major change in their lives.

"I had to get used to a whole new way of keeping myself clean, taking showers daily and washing my hands regularly," says Benjamin, one of our new apprentices.

Gaining an apprenticeship through Bio-Benin is not just about learning how to produce delicious meals and great-tasting craft beer, it's also a life-changing experience in so many ways that equips students for a successful and healthy life.

AImée is among the stars of Bio-Benin's training program in culinary skills, thanks to the excellent teaching and careful guidance of Bio-Benin's Executive Director, Guillaume Lonhoudjo.

Aimée, who plans to open her own restaurant when she graduates from our program at Chez Guillaume, says she has "learned so much about cooking seafood and pizza, hygiene and cleanliness and being polite and friendly to clients." She is also enthusiastic about how she has learned to prepare and bottle fruit juices and craft beer, all of which will be enormously useful when she sets up her own establishment.

Aimée is just one of many of our trainees whose lives have been transformed by learning a marketable skill that enables them to make a living wage to support their families and live a dignified and meaningful life.
