Tropical Cyclone Freddy Relief Fund

Summary

Cyclone Freddy is the longest-lived tropical cyclone ever recorded. The storm has killed hundreds of people and displaced tens of thousands across communities in Madagascar, Mozambique, and Malawi. It is one of the deadliest storms in southern Africa in recent years. Your donation will go to vetted nonprofits on the front lines of relief and recovery.

Challenge

Hundreds of people remain missing and some of the worst-affected communities remain without any help. In some instances, communities have been forced to rescue friends and loved ones from mud and rubble with their bare hands. The storm is worsening many existing challenges in these countries. For example, in Malawi, the destruction caused by the storm threatens to exacerbate a cholera resurgence.

Solution

All donations to the Cyclone Freddy Relief Fund will support relief and recovery efforts in all affected countries. Initially, the fund helps first responders meet survivors' immediate needs for food, fuel, clean water, medicine, and shelter. As needs emerge, we will support longer-term recovery efforts run by local, vetted organizations in the impacted area.

How Your Donation Will Be Used

When you donate to GlobalGiving's Tropical Cycle Freddy Relief Fund, your donation will be used to:

  • Provide food and emergency medical supplies to people
  • Support temporary relief and emergency supplies for displaced families
  • Support recovery and rebuilding efforts in the region
  • Meet other needs that emerge from the impacted communities

About GlobalGiving’s Disaster Response

When a disaster strikes, recovery efforts led by people who live and work in affected communities are often overlooked and underfunded. GlobalGiving is changing this reality. Since 2004, we've been shifting decision-making power to crises-affected communities through trust-based grantmaking and support.

We make it easy, quick, and safe to support people on the ground who understand needs in their communities better than anyone else.

They were there long before the news cameras arrived, and they’ll be there long after the cameras leave. They know how to make their communities more resilient to future disasters, and they’re already hard at work. GlobalGiving puts donations and grants directly into their hands. Because the status quo—which gives the vast majority of funding to a few large organizations—doesn’t make sense.
