An update on your donation to the Tropical Cyclone Freddy Relief Fund

By Victoria Mendez | Senior Associate, Disaster Response

We are immensely grateful for your generosity. Your donation has had a significant impact on communities affected by Cyclone Freddy.

The longest-lived tropical cyclone ever recorded, Cyclone Freddy devastated communities across multiple countries in southern Africa, claimed the lives of hundreds of people, and displaced tens of thousands of families. The most severe impacts have been felt in Malawi, where the toll has been particularly devastating with more than 650 people killed.

Recognizing the critical support needed in Malawi, we’ve allocated the majority of the money raised through this Fund to address the urgent needs in the country. Thanks to your generous contribution, GlobalGiving was able to fund the critical work of Busy Youth Organization, a youth-led organization based in the city of Blantyre, Malawi - a place that was one of the hardest hit from the cyclone. The organization used this funding to provide clean drinking water to communities across Blantyre that continue to be displaced by the impacts of Cyclone Freddy.

Additionally, a grant has been awarded to ADPP Mozambique to support its school and home rebuilding efforts in Inhambane Province, Mozambique - another area that didn't get much attention after the storm. The organization also used funds from GlobalGiving to provide emergency aid kits to affected families, including things like food packages.

This fund is no longer accepting donations, and this will be the last fund report of this kind from our team. You can stay connected with our work through Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and our Learn Library, where we regularly share stories about the incredible impact of the powerful GlobalGiving community. With gratitude,

Victoria  + the GlobalGiving team

About GlobalGiving’s Disaster Response

When a disaster strikes, recovery efforts led by people who live and work in affected communities are often overlooked and underfunded. GlobalGiving is changing this reality. Since 2004, we've been shifting decision-making power to crises-affected communities through trust-based grantmaking and support.

We make it easy, quick, and safe to support people on the ground who understand needs in their communities better than anyone else.

They were there long before the news cameras arrived, and they’ll be there long after the cameras leave. They know how to make their communities more resilient to future disasters, and they’re already hard at work. GlobalGiving puts donations and grants directly into their hands. Because the status quo—which gives the vast majority of funding to a few large organizations—doesn’t make sense.
