Azafady is proud to say that in the nine months we have been campaigning to save Tsagnoria School on global giving we have received £1,825 worth of donations. This money will pay for: 50 aluminium roof sheets to weather proof the school; 20 benches that will seat 80 students; six whiteboards with a year’s supply of chalk; 42 bags of cement to render the walls and enough left to paint the interior walls of both classrooms. We would like to say a massive thank you to everybody who has donated so far and has got us to where we are. It is truly appreciated.
This project is very close to our hearts and tackles a major issue not just in Madagascan society but world over- primary education. The average Malagasy citizen only has 4.4 years of school education (UNICEF). Since the political turmoil of 2009, Madagascar’s government has not had the funds or resources to invest in the school system and, as a result, the country’s education system has suffered. In remote areas of Madagascar over half of all communities do not have a school within them (UNICEF). The Anosy region, where Tsagnoria is located, is one of the most poverty-stricken and vulnerable parts of Madagascar. 1 in 2 children have never been to school and over 2 in 3 have not completed primary education.
We therefore think it is of the upmost importance to rebuild this school and give a 1000 children the chance of education. Education gives children the chance to reach beyond their situation and to escape the poverty cycle they find themselves caught in. For each extra year of education a child receives their average lifetime earnings are increased by 10% (DFID, 2010). The school in its current state is verging on the unusable. Lessons must be stopped when there is bad weather. Resources are scarce and children must study whilst lying on the floor. It is a situation that together we can solve.
At azafady we want to build on our current success and push onwards to our target of £5,088. To reach our target of providing 40 desks and benches, constructing 2 separate classrooms, repairing the walls and replacing the leaking roof, we still need to raise over £3000. Starting on the 3rd of March global giving is holding a 50% bonus giving week. Please consider donating during this week and help us to improve the lives and the hopes of children in Tsagnoria. Thank you.
