TURKANA COUNTY PASTORALISTS RESILIENCE PROJECT:

Summary

The project intends to build resilience among the pastoralists who have lost their livelihood through climate change and have already grown and can not go back to school. Here we intend to empower them economically, insure their animals and provide facilities to enhance their animals value. We also will initiate animals fodder programme and a comprehensive water project for nomadic groups. Animals are insured on tribal theft and climate changes and working on increasing produce in all seasons

Challenge

Turkana county has 855633 people and 83% of them are pastoralists. They depend on livestock. Change in climate and harsh climatic conditions have made this no more unreliable livelihood. Hunger and loss of lots of animals experienced. Children and women are the most affected. 83 % lost animals to droughts hence hunger and increased nomadic moves as people go into dangerous borders. Turkana County borders 4 countries and their pastoralist enemies are there. Imagine 89% illiteracy levels in them?

Solution

- Provide water so as there is plenty for animals and people to avoid dangerous borders 2. Increase numeracy and literacy skills among them. 3 As they provide land, project will provide technology an fodder for the left animals. 4. Linking the property to insurance services usually in Kenya for livestock insurance for those that lose animals to drought and banditry.Providing alternative livelihood through VSLA concept 5 Establishment of livestock marketing systems and associations.productivity

Long-Term Impact

Continuous ownership of animals, increased water and food for animals hence resilient communities, increased market for their produce and animals, increased sources of livelihoods for community and children, increased numeracy and literacy skills for the pastoralists for their own programmes running in sustainability phase, increased knowledge on their human rights and access to foods, health and education especially for children under 5 years and pregnant and lactating women, utilized lands
