Challenge

On Oct 30, 2020, a 7.0M earthquake in the Aegean Sea caused widespread damage along the coasts of both Turkey and Greece. At least 60 people were killed and more than 600 were injured from collapsed buildings and flooding according to local officials. This fund was created to provide immediate relief to survivors in the form of food, shelter, water, and medicine. After immediate needs are met, additional funds will support long-term assistance to help residents recover and rebuild.

Solution

All donations to this fund will support recovery and relief efforts for this earthquake. Initially, funds will help first responders meet survivors' immediate needs for food, fuel, clean water, hygiene products, and shelter. The fund will later transition to support longer-term recovery efforts run primarily by local, vetted organizations in the communities affected in Greece and Turkey.

Long-Term Impact

We believe that organizations that are deeply rooted in local communities are in the best position to provide long-term support for survivors of natural disasters like these. By funding the relief efforts of local organizations, donations to this fund have the potential to build stronger response capacity so that these organizations are better equipped to face future challenges.

About GlobalGiving’s Disaster Response

When a disaster strikes, recovery efforts led by people who live and work in affected communities are often overlooked and underfunded. GlobalGiving is changing this reality. Since 2004, we've been shifting decision-making power to crises-affected communities through trust-based grantmaking and support.

We make it easy, quick, and safe to support people on the ground who understand needs in their communities better than anyone else.

They were there long before the news cameras arrived, and they’ll be there long after the cameras leave. They know how to make their communities more resilient to future disasters, and they’re already hard at work. GlobalGiving puts donations and grants directly into their hands. Because the status quo—which gives the vast majority of funding to a few large organizations—doesn’t make sense.
