On October 30th, 2020, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck in the Aegean Sea off the coast of Turkey and Greece. In Turkey, 117 people were killed and 15,000 displaced, with widespread damage occurring primarily in Izmir. The Greek island of Samos - home to many migrants and asylum seekers - was also impacted. There were more than 25 aftershocks felt across the region.

Thanks to youand donors who gave to two crisis response activations on Facebookthe GlobalGiving community was able to support three organizations responding to the earthquake in both Turkey and Greece:

  • Association for Solidarity with Asylum Seekers and Migrants (ASAM) provided a critical service in Izmir immediately after the earthquake - assessing needs among those affected, identifying more than 5,000 damaged homes, and assisting three dozen families in accessing temporary shelter.  In addition, ASAM is providing critical emotional support - during the 40 days post-earthquake, ASAM staff reached 62,074 individuals in 10,437 households via 4,585 house visits and 5,851 phone calls.
  • Action for Education, a Samos-based organization, is working with refugees, mobilized to support those impacted by the earthquake. Ten families awaiting asylum status were provided temporary housing after their houses were damaged, and around 200 food and hygiene packs were distributed to families and young adults impacted by the quake.
  • Aksi Cepat Tannap (ACT Foundation), a long-standing partner of GlobalGiving, has received funding from a number of our disaster response activations.  ACT Foundation distributed hot meals, hygiene supplies, blankets, and more to survivors in Izmir.

This fund will be closed this month, as all of your contributions have been sent to those in need. Thank you again - your generous support made this work possible.

With Gratitude,

Donna Callejon + the GlobalGiving Team

About GlobalGiving’s Disaster Response

When a disaster strikes, recovery efforts led by people who live and work in affected communities are often overlooked and underfunded. GlobalGiving is changing this reality. Since 2004, we've been shifting decision-making power to crises-affected communities through trust-based grantmaking and support.

We make it easy, quick, and safe to support people on the ground who understand needs in their communities better than anyone else.

They were there long before the news cameras arrived, and they’ll be there long after the cameras leave. They know how to make their communities more resilient to future disasters, and they’re already hard at work. GlobalGiving puts donations and grants directly into their hands. Because the status quo—which gives the vast majority of funding to a few large organizations—doesn’t make sense.
