Dear Donors,

More than 3 weeks have passed since the earthquakes that cause great destruction in Turkey. We continue our support in the field by identifying the changing needs with your support. After the earthquakes in which more than 45.000 people lost their lives, thousands of people are forced to live in tents in cold weather as their homes were destroyed. They cannot reach their most basic needs, and sometimes they cannot find clean water to wash their hands. Despite the many aids, the needs in the region continue.

Women and children are the most affected people from the earthquake. After the earthquake the responsibilities of women have increased in daily life. Many things are expected from women, from the care of children and the elderly people to the arrangement of their living spaces. Children need more support that adults to overcome their traumas. The most important support for children is also expected from mothers.

In our work in the region, we distributed underwear for women and children, sanitary pads, baby diapers, baby formula, sick diapers, wet wipes and drinking water. We continue to determine needs through the information we gained from interviews with women and children in the field. We consider specially the increased vulnerability of women after an earthquake.

We continue our work that support the well-being of women and children in the earthquake area with your support. Even the smallest donation touches many women and children is one of the most important reasons that increase our motivation to work in difficult conditions. Thanks to the continuity of your donations, we will be able to reach more women and children. Your presence with us will make us stronger in the future.

Mavi Kalem is in the Earthquake Region

Dear Donors,

This information note is prepared to provide information about Mavi Kalem’s work in the region affected by the Kahramanmaras earthquake and will be updated at regular intervals

After the earthquakes that caused great destruction in 10 provinces of Turkey, we started our needs assessment, supply and support activities based on the needs of the region.

Our teammates, who conducted one-on-one needs assessment with women in Adana, Iskenderun, Serinyol and Antakya, also distributed urgent needs such as underwear, pantyhose, underoos, baby diapers, baby formula and wet wipes for women and children. While the preparations for the shipment of 24 tons of water to Hatay are currently being completed, it will be delivered and distributed to the region within a week.

Testimonies from the Earthquake Region

“People who cannot access the tents have been staying with their children in cars or on the street for days. Those who cannot use their car due to debris falling on the vehicles, try to spend the night by lighting a fire if they can find wood, bush etc and warming up around it.” Antakya-8.2.2023 “There are families who do not go to the assembly area because there are voices coming from under the rubble, waiting by the ruins without tents and fire in the cold for their acquaintances to be saved. Some of them are families with children.” Antakya, 10.2.2023

“Children are crying from hunger, cold, or perhaps unrest. Families are very crowded in the places where they take shelter because either the tents haven’t reached the area or they are not enough.” 12.2.2023

“We don’t go to school anymore, I love school, but the school is about to break down, I would like to go if there’ll be a new one. We want to be police. Only we are Syrians, there are no other Syrians here in the tents. My father speaks a little Turkish and I know Turkish too. My brother needs diapers.” Antakya, 13.2.2023
