Thank you for your generous donation to the Turkey and Syria Earthquake Relief Fund. As we mark one year since the devastating earthquakes across southern Turkey and northern Syria, support from the global community—from people like you—has fueled progress and brought hope to places where it seemed lost.

GlobalGiving’s trusted network of vetted nonprofit partners in the region remain on the front lines of response. Their daily work is a testament to the immense scale of need unleashed by the earthquakes: more than 55,000 lives lost, hundreds of thousands injured, and almost 6 million people displaced.

In Turkey, the earthquakes left more than 1.5 million people homeless, with many communities still residing in container homes and makeshift shelters. In Syria, the earthquakes exacerbated the vulnerabilities of people already caught in the crossfire of a 12-year-long civil war and an economic crisis, leaving hundreds of thousands of people living in tents and grappling with hunger as rising food prices and dwindling incomes make it increasingly difficult to meet even the most basic needs.

Over the past year, GlobalGiving has awarded 55 grants from this fund to 41 organizations in our vetted nonprofit community. These trusted partners are based in and working across the most impacted areas of Turkey and Syria. They have shown extraordinary dedication to rebuilding their communities, working tirelessly to advance recovery efforts amidst the most challenging conditions.

Here is a glimpse of the critical work you've supported through your generosity:

  • Center For Civil Society And Democracy In Syria (CCSD) (CCSD) is a refugee-led organization that has provided critical support to nearly 20 grassroots organizations in Turkey and 18 in northwestern Syria, helping more than 30,000 individuals and 7,000 families receive emergency aid and mental health services. Currently, CCSD provides gender-sensitive programs and social cohesion projects serving internally displaced persons, refugees, and local communities, and provides micro-grants to Syrian grassroots organizations for recovery efforts.
  • Guardians of Equality Movement (GEM) operates in regions where safety and equitable access to resources are lacking for the LGBTQIA+ community. Following the earthquakes, GEM has played a critical role in getting funding and technical support to local LGBTQIA+ organizations in Turkey and Syria related to emergency management tools and addressing hate attacks against LGBTQIA+ individuals already dealing with the effects of the earthquakes.
  • Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS) is one of the leading organizations on the ground in northwest Syria. It has a network of 40 medical facilities, including hospitals and mobile clinics. The organization has served tens of thousands of earthquake survivors with emergency medical care, addressing severe fractures, head trauma, and organ damage. Despite challenges, including damage to several of its own medical centers, SAMS continues to provide specialized health care to earthquake survivors, including ongoing medical care, long-term physical therapy, rehabilitation, prosthetics, dialysis, and mental health services. It is launching a special child protection initiative, training doctors, nurses, midwives, and medical students, dispatching mobile medical clinics to displacement camps, deploying highly specialized medical missions, and working with partners to deliver critical winter aid to displaced families and children.
  • Educational Volunteers Foundation of Turkey (TEGV) is providing critical psychological and academic support to children, parents, and teachers in earthquake-affected areas across Turkey. Survivors face severe psychological stress due to injuries, persistent fear of aftershocks, and emotional trauma from witnessing destruction and loss. TEGV's primary goal is to alleviate deepening mental health issues resulting from earthquake trauma, providing vital support to foster resilience in affected communities.

GlobalGiving is committed to supporting the long-term recovery efforts in Turkey and Syria, working closely with local nonprofit partners to provide relief and help rebuild lives. We will continue to manage this fund and support our partners in the months and years ahead.

As we reflect on the impacts of the earthquakes at this one-year milestone, let us renew our commitment to solidarity with the people of Turkey and Syria by contributing to their journey of recovery.

With immense gratitude,

Victoria + the GlobalGiving Team

About GlobalGiving’s Disaster Response

When a disaster strikes, recovery efforts led by people who live and work in affected communities are often overlooked and underfunded. GlobalGiving is changing this reality. Since 2004, we've been shifting decision-making power to crises-affected communities through trust-based grantmaking and support.

We make it easy, quick, and safe to support people on the ground who understand needs in their communities better than anyone else.

They were there long before the news cameras arrived, and they’ll be there long after the cameras leave. They know how to make their communities more resilient to future disasters, and they’re already hard at work. GlobalGiving puts donations and grants directly into their hands. Because the status quo—which gives the vast majority of funding to a few large organizations—doesn’t make sense.
