Training women on latrine construction
Dear Friends,
Greetings from Samar, Philippines. Samar was devastated by Typhoon Haiyan and then by Typhoon Hagupit few months after. The need to provide durable, low-cost latrines is still very high and there is a need to provide the needed skills for the local communities to build the latrines themselves so that knowledge is localized and the need to get outsiders is minimized. Women can be builders too and we build their capacities through the process of "learning by doing". This is also a good social enterprise and income generation for the communities because there are times that international NGO's and local government contract out latrine constructions. Thus this reporting period we are able to train a total of 73 semi-skilled women living in 26 barrios in Gandara, Western Samar. The training consist of building the concrete ring septic tank, building the flooring and setting the toilet bowl and building the walls, roofing and door. Next step will be for us to provide them with follow-up skills enhncement in the coming months and as they apply their skills.
Very sincerely yours,
Cora

Toilet bowl production
Dear Friends,
Greetings. This reporting period we continue to provide much-needed sanitation support for local people affected by Typhoon Hagupit. Our effort is focused on training local artisans how to produce sanitation products especially toilet bowls. This is an important phase of our effort so we transfer the technology to the barrios. This period we were able to train a total of 15 local masons and they have produced and distributed a total of 75 toilet bowls already. Their approach is to sell the bowls at a small profit so that they earn some income and the reflows they use to produce more toilet bowls. We were able also to distribute a total of 300 hygiene kits consisting of soap, toothbrush and toothpaste to 300 families.
Aside from the production, we were able to link-up with a local NGO who are providing sanitation behavioral change training to barrio leaders and the training is called "community-led total sanitation." This is with the realization of the need to change behaviors of those without toilets to use and manage their toilets properly and help contain the spread of diseases. We were able to send 3 of our staff to a train the trainers program.
Very sincerely yours,
Cora

Low-cost sanitation training
Dear all Friends,
Greetings from Leyte. Our initiative supporting local residents badly affected by Typhoon Hagupit is on-going. As to this reporting date, we have provided 300 food packs, repaired 75 toilets and constructed 12 new ones. Our food packs consist of rice, dried fish, milk and mungbean. We are selecting the most needy among the residents as recipients. We are focusing our assistance in 2 barrios in Albuera Municipality and these are Talisayan and Benolho. Our toilet is the same design that we implemented before and mainly consist of coconut lumber framing, concrete septic tank and flooring, galvanized iron roofing. Aside from constructing toilets, and due to demands by many, we are also able to train local artisans on how to manufacture toilets and its parts. In this way, our efforts is replicated many times.
Again thanks so much for your support.
Very sincerely yours,
Cora
