Dear Friends and Supporters,
Greetings from Samar. Thank you very much for your generous support to our project to provide relief for people affected by Typhoon Hagupit. We focus on sanitation since we started because this is an urgent need and in barrios we visited, the average open defecation rate is very high at 70 percent. This was the case even before the areas were affected by the typhoon. This time we were able to partner with the Department of Social Welfare and Development in training 15 artisans in the production of latrine sub-structure using ferro-cement technology. We prioritized this because we found out that the sub-structure or septic tank most often are unimproved and unsanitary subjecting local residents to water-borne diseases. The trained artisans will be resource persons in their respective localities and it is expected that the local government unit together with the Department of Health and other agencies will provide much needed fund support. Our next activity will be to supervise the trained artisans in an actual field implementation to make sure that the sub-structure are of high quality.
