Summary

Nigeria faces a severe mental health crisis, with only 200 psychiatrists for 200+ million people-1 psychiatrist per 1 million. Stigma worsens the issue, as many believe mental illness is attributed to "witchcraft," leading to a horrific abuses like beatings and chaining and denial of medical care. Over multiple cohorts, this U.S.-Nigeria Tele-Psychiatry Skill-Share Program will train 7,000 Nigerian health workers virtually through expert-led cohorts facilitated by U.S. psychiatrists.

Challenge

Nigeria's mental health system is collapsing under demand: fewer than 200 psychiatrists serve over 200million people, about 1 per million compared to WHO's recommended 1 per 10,000. Around 60million Nigerians face mental health conditions, yet fewer than 10% receive professional care. Harmful myths label mental illness a curse, leaving millions untreated and ostracized. Without urgent training, preventable suffering & rates of homelessness, suicide, and family breakdown will keep rising.

Solution

This fully virtual, role-model driven, cohort-based program will train 7,000 Nigerian health workers through successive three-month cohorts - no travel needed, no borders limiting access. U.S. psychiatrists will lead live case discussions, deliver comprehensive e-learning modules, and provide ongoing mentorship. The structured curriculum combines group support with learning kits to enhance skills in diagnosis, culturally sensitive treatment, and stigma reduction through professional guidance.

Long-Term Impact

Equipping 7,000 clinicians through virtual training will cultivate a strong, decentralized mental health workforce. These trained professionals will serve remote communities, mentor new cohorts, and advocate for better services. Their improved skills will lead to earlier mental health diagnoses, more compassionate care, and reduced stigma. This homegrown workforce will reduce brain drain while integrating telepsychiatry into primary care, transforming access for disadvantaged populations.
