Recovery & Renewal: Rebuilding STEM Classrooms

By Danielle Webster | Board of Directors

In March 2026, SOSA provided critical support to seven schools in Western Jamaica severely impacted by Hurricane Melissa. These were schools where damage had disrupted not just buildings, but students’ ability to engage in meaningful STEM learning.

Each school faced different challenges, and our response reflected that. SOSA worked closely with school leaders to identify their most urgent needs and delivered targeted support to help restore basic STEM functionality as quickly as possible. This included essential laboratory tools such as microscopes, thermometers, balances, and glassware; hands-on STEM kits and experimental materials; and classroom resources that support effective teaching and student engagement.

This initial phase has made a meaningful difference. Schools are regaining the ability to deliver practical science, demonstrate key concepts, and reintroduce hands-on learning experiences that are vital to student understanding and confidence. These are important steps forward, but they are only the beginning.

Significant gaps remain however. Many schools are still operating with limited equipment, reduced capacity, and ongoing barriers to delivering a full STEM curriculum. Others are still waiting for assistance.

SOSA’s next phase is focused on expanding and deepening this impact reaching additional schools, prioritizing those with the most severe needs, and delivering more comprehensive, curriculum-aligned STEM recovery packages. We are also committed to ensuring long-term success by pairing material support with teacher development, enrichment, and digital learning resources.

Thank you for your continued support! It allows us not only to respond to immediate needs, but to help schools fully recover, rebuild stronger, and provide students with the quality STEM education they deserve.
