Following news of the devastating earthquake in Nepal, there is an urgency to respond to the immediate needs of survivors and to support long term recovery efforts. Karuna's partner organisation, Green Tara, runs mother and child health work in the district of Pharphing. The district has been very seriously affected. At the moment we're engaged in urgent relief work of distributing food and shelter, as we build a rehabilitation plan for the project and region. Please give generously.
Following news of the devastating earthquake in Nepal, there is an urgency to respond to the immediate needs of survivors and to support long term recovery efforts. Nepal has been devastated by an earthquake which struck on Saturday. More than 8,000 people have been killed and around 8 million people have been affected by the devastation. The villages and more remote areas have been completely destroyed, including thousands of schools, health posts and birthing centres.
Karuna's partner organisation in Nepal runs mother and child health work in the district of Pharphing. The district has been very seriously affected. Half of the houses there have been destroyed and as access to the area is still restricted we are as yet unaware of the total number of fatalities. We're providing emergency relief with shelter food and water, as well as providing medical care. We are constructing a plan for a rehabilitation project in the region.
The long-term needs are huge. Once urgent relief work has finished, the project will work to train health workers, 'Female Community Health Volunteers', and community health workers to help with psychological trauma.
