Refugees from far...and now from near.

By Mary Jane D Kupsky | US Volunteer, Kids for Kids

We must ensure children do not end up in camps
We must ensure children do not end up in camps

When we started this project, most of the people we were helping were coming from South Sudan to escape starvation and strife.  Now, with news of widespread crop failure in Darfur, we know we will see people seeking refuge from the storms of life right at home.

Even though Kids for Kids is focused on long-term sustainable change, we cannot ignore the present situation in Darfur. Last week, the Governor of North Darfur called for aid because the low rainfall last year has left many villages with a failed harvest. The Government of Sudan does not normally ask for help so this shows just how bad it is- the summer has barely started but the temperatures are already soaring. The failed harvest, combined with soaring inflation and the drastic devaluation of the Sudanese pound has left every village asking for help.

Seed for replanting and fodder to keep goats and donkeys alive until the rains come in June is needed now. We must keep those who have recently arrived in Kids for Kids villages from giving up and falling into the desperation of the huge refugee camps.

Importantly, seed and fodder can also keep local families from becoming refugees right in their own country.

Watching the evening news can leave you feeling helpless.  But even a small donation to Kids for Kids can save lives right now and change lives forever.  Anything you can do will mean everything to a hungry family.

Thank you so very much!
