Fewer refugees settle in North Darfur but Famine Poses Risk of Refugee Status

By Sage Lancaster | Project Leader

We can't let families become refugees
We can't let families become refugees

These days fewer families are coming as far as Darfur to seek refuge from the famine and poverty in South Sudan and East Africa. We still have Internally Displaced Persons settling in some of our villages, but the number has decreased. However, there is a new problem at hand - famine in Darfur. Many Kids for Kids villages have less than 10% of a harvest which should have fed them through the year because of the extreme lack of rainfall. Parents do not know how they will feed their children and countless mothers have already been left on their own, as fathers and older sons have left home in a desperate search for a way to provide food. The thought of this is absolutely horrible. If families do not get help soon they will become internally displaced - refugees in their own home.

We are grateful to you all for supporting our project helping refugees, but for now, we will be closing this project.  Honesty is our policy and we do not want to have funds donated to help families fleeing the famine in South Sudan, when we cannot spend the money exactly as promised at the current time. We must now focus our efforts on helping families in Kids for Kids villages survive the famine with which they have been struck.  We have to provide as much emergency aid as is needed to ensure this crisis does not esculate.

On GlobalGiving, we have a number of projects that support our sustainable work in Darfur such as digging fresh water handpumps close to villages, training village midwives, and providing life-saving donkeys and goats. Two of our current projects will help us help families that are suffering the famine.  "Children Face Starvation Now" helps to prevent families in our villages from becoming refugees, giving them food for the children, and provides sacks of seed to plant for next year's harvest.  "Goats and Donkeys Transform Lives in Darfur" gives families animals that will change their lives and ensure their survival during this difficult time.  Goat’s milk is desperately needed to help prevent children from starving.  Donkeys will help plow the fields and carry clean water.

Thank you so much for your kind donations which helped us to respond when refugees were arriving from South Sudan.  We are so hopeful that you will continue to be by our side as we respond to both the current faminie in Darfur and create sustainable change, saving lives and changing lives forever.  We are small, but with your help, we are effective each and every day.

The links to these projects are below. Your support will help us stop families from becoming refugees in their own homes.
