Each year, thousands of wildfires burn through the western United States, destroying millions of acres of land including grasslands and forests as well as homes and towns. Residents of these areas must evacuate, sometimes with little warning, grabbing whatever essentials they can. Many never get to return home as their houses and belongings are destroyed by the fires. Peace Winds is partnering with local chapters of the American Red Cross to bring relief and recovery to survivors of these disast
The number of U.S. wildfires has been increasing from year to year; according to the National Interagency Fire Center, there were 58,950 wildfires in 2020 compared with 50,477 in 2019, and as of November 2021, the U.S. had seen 52,729 wildfires last year. While the hot, dry summer months are traditionally the mark of "wildfire season," climate change has resulted in unseasonably warm, dry, and windy weather even during the winter, causing some states to see fires outside of this typical season.
Peace Winds is partnering with local chapters of the American Red Cross in wildfire-affected areas to aid survivors in the process of relief and recovery. This includes providing safe shelter, medical care, and meals to survivors as well as support to emergency responders. For the longer-term, relief efforts will help beneficiaries create recovery plans and provide financial support for the process of rebuilding their homes.
The increasingly warming climate as a result of climate change ensures that the issue of U.S. wildfires is only going to continue, and likely worsen in the months and years to come. Peace Winds seeks to build long-term partnerships with first responder organizations in areas where help is needed to ensure that the thousands of people impacted by these disasters continue to have comfort and care in the wake of tragedy.
