The project aims to develop and test vocational training activities for agricultural microenterprises for girls in the Aumazo tutoring program. Priorities are for girls who attended the program, passed the high school entrance exam, and had to drop out of high school for lack of tuition support. Also, girls in current tutoring program will benefit from vocational training and acquire livelihood skills. The project will test curricula approaches for broader use while enabling employment creation.
Many girls living in rural Cameroon either fail high school entrance exams or drop out. They are hampered in earning a livelihood, especially lacking the knowledge to carry out income-earning activities. The planned Girls High School in Bankondji proposes implementing afternoon vocational training activities in addition to its academic programs. We will conduct iterative testing to develop improved and efficient methods for vocational training, for everyday aspects of microenterprise development
The project will ultimately promote skill development and financial freedom. Girls will learn vegetable growing and processing activities. The pilot micro-enterprise program will allow girls to design and test new techniques for growing, harvesting, and transforming vegetables from subsistence to cash crops. Agribusiness will give girls the power to earn a living, get out of the precarious situation and be able to support themselves financially. They would have acquired financial freedom.
The project fits into our "transformation" vision. Initially, 15 girls will participate in the program per year. They will make money selling their products in nearby markets and towns. The project will allow girls not only to learn skills and make a livelihood but to develop confidence and responsibility, and mainly to gain their financial freedom. In the long run, the pilot project is critical to ensuring that high school graduates are well equipped to earn a livelihood everywhere they go.
