Summary

Thousands of women and girls in rural Nigeria face monthly health risks due to lack of sanitary products. Many use leaves, tissue, or rags during menstruation, leading to infections, missed school, and shame. This project will provide 15,000 reusable sanitary pads to women in low-income communities. The pads are safe, washable, and last up to 2 years, offering a practical option for menstrual hygiene.

Challenge

In rural parts of Nigeria, many women and girls lack access to sanitary products. They often use rags, paper, or even leaves, which can cause infections and discomfort. This creates school absenteeism, poor hygiene, and embarrassment. Commercial pads are expensive or unavailable. Without safe menstrual options, many young girls skip school, and women are unable to work during their periods.

Solution

We'll produce and provide 15,000 washable sanitary pads to women and girls in low-income communities. The reusable pads are safe, last up to 24 months, and reduce monthly spending. Local women will be trained to make the pads, promoting community-based production. Distribution will target rural areas where there is no access to safe products, giving women a cleaner and more practical option.

Long-Term Impact

With reusable pads that last up to two years, women and girls can manage their periods more safely and consistently. This helps reduce infections, school absenteeism, and shame. Local production creates new skills and income streams for those involved. As more women use washable pads, dependence on costly disposable products drops, and regular participation in school and work becomes more manageable.
