Summary

The Water Project's mission is to provide clean water service to the 30,000 Darfur genocide survivors. About 85% of survivors are women, children and elderly in the refugee camp in Chad. Desert winds and rain displace sand from afar filling refugee water wells during the summer. Refugees depend on ponds for drinking water during the rainy season, but suffer water shortage due to contamination. While refugees volunteer to clean up the buried wells, they need tools and resources to maintain them.

Challenge

The water sources for 7,000 households in the Darfur refugee camp in Chad are ponds during rainy season and wells during the other seasons. The ponds as sources of drinking water are not enclosed and get contaminated as they are shared with livestock. Due to deforestation, the wind gathers contaminants which fill and bury the wells. After the rainy season, refugees stand in line for days awaiting access to water.

Solution

The Water Project provides resources to volunteers serving 30,000 Darfur refugees. The project will provide the volunteers with tools, containers, and food to assist their efforts in removing debris and properly containing clean well water. We are raising awareness deforestation and the negative impact it has on sources of drinking water in the refugee camp. We encourage the refugees to plant trees around their camps

Long-Term Impact

We expect this project will increase access to clean drinking water for 30,000 refugees by 2018. As a result of sustaining clean water sources, refugees can understand the importance of planting trees, maintaining water wells and working together to solve survival issues with little assistance.
