WeOwnTV Freetown Media Center celebrates 7 years

By Banker White | Executive Director, WeOwnTV

Opening celebration
Opening celebration

Seven years ago, I travelled to Freetown, Sierra Leone to officially open the doors to the WeOwnTV Freetown Media Center.  It has been an incredible journey since then and we are more excited than ever for the future of the media center. In this short time, led by a collective of talented, young Sierra Leonean filmmakers, the media center has grown to become a leading organization supporting media literacy, civic engagement and media production training that facilitates workforce development in Sierra Leone.

Our programs provide technical support and training to empower storytellers, filmmakers, journalists, actors, and musicians to express themselves creatively while producing original media. Since we opened the doors to the center we have trained more than 300 filmmakers who have produced over 50 films. WeOwnTV filmmakers produce both documentary and narrative films on topics that range from the transatlantic slave trade to the achievements of disabled citizens to stories of the recent Ebola outbreak.

We want to share a short film, YOUTH, which was collaboratively produced during our inaugural year: https://vimeo.com/36582864

We are also excited to share that we have recently received support and will be launching a new Filmmaker Fellowship in 2018!  We are thrilled to have this new support and partnership as we plan for next year's filmmaker fellowship. We would also greatly appreciate any donation you can make in support of independent filmmakers and media training. Please share this project with your family and friends.

Thanks for your continued support,

Banker White
