Peace Winds responds quickly to Typhoon Hagibis

Peace Winds continues to assist the people and victims of the floods in Western Japan with reutrning to their homes, aiding with medical care and counseling, and providing community events.

However Typhoon Hagibis struck Japan october 11-13 with floods not seen for more than 50 years. All Peace Winds staff have been mobilized to aid with rescue, food and non-food items to the victims, moving people into evacuation centers where Peace Winds can provide relief and comfort. Peace Winds is always preparing for natural disaster making connections with communities and local governments so that response can be immediate and effective. peace Winds had established working relationships with medical teams and volunteers enabling a quick response. Our rescue teams with trained dogs are dispatched to sites even before the typhoon strikes, ready to respond.

Helping Mabi City evacuees -- warm meals, secure housing

One year later Peace Winds is still providing aid.

It's nearly a year after the devastating floods followed by Typhoon Jebi and the unprecedented heatwave. Peace Winds has been steadily supporting the needs of the vulnerable, affected communities of Mabi town and Kure-city in Hiroshima prefecture.

In Mabi, just outside of Kurashiki, Peace Winds provided medical supplies to the 12 medical clinics Peace Winds also supplied electronic medical record and data management systems to each of the clinics. Although some victims still remain in temporary shelters, many have returned home. Peace Winds has been working with earthmoving machinery and with a local NGOs to remove mud, sand from the homes and also assist with rehabilitation of the homes. The communities of Mabi and Kure have been focusing on "revitalization" with local residents and businesses trying to "reconnect and rebuild" for the betterment of all residents.

Peace Winds has been providing assistance for childcare enabling parents to have a break, as well as focus on rebuilding their homes, shops, and businesses. At the Mimyou Nursery in Koyaura, Saka-cho, the head of the nursery said, "Just some months before the floods, we had just concluded overall renovation. We lost everything but some few items. Now we've moved temporarily to a neighboring primary school, assuming the reconstruction of the new building is completed within this year." Peace Winds is providing staff time, and games and play equipment to Mimyou and several other nurseries.

Since March 2019, Peace Winds working with Kure and Mabi have been targeting disaster preparedness, both policies and procedures. The communities are very receptive knowing that this unprecedented flood and heat wave may again strike, and disaster preparedness saves lives and costs.
