Early July brought heavy rains to western Japan and caused massive flooding and hundreds of landslides. Shortly after the floods, a massive and unprecedented heat wave also hit, dramatically slowing recovery.
Many people have not returned to their homes. Thousands still live in evacuation centers. Evacuee’s homes and property remain severely damaged. Clean up is expensive and time consuming. Living in evacuation centers during this difficult time causes stress and depression.
Peace Winds is aiding recovery by organizing mud-outs of evacuees’ homes, including providing power washers, transportation, generators, and coordinating volunteers and staff to assist with clean up. Peace Winds has launched and financed three mobile medical clinics to travel throughout affected areas offering medical treatment at evacuation centers. Peace Winds established a pet daycare center in Kurashiki where pet owners can drop off their animals while they work or clean up their homes. Peace Winds plans to expand the vet clinic and pet care facilities.
In the coming months, Peace Winds needs support to aid recovery and to maintain long-term shelter operations for evacuees. Peace Winds also will provide resources such as counseling and relocation planning to affected families. Peace Winds is coordinating engagement activities, including after-school activities for children and community events for adults and the elderly.
We appreciate your continued support of the Japan flood survivors.
