Summary

Expenses on Wildlife activities in communities surrounding Nyika reserve include conducting civic education meetings where dramas, shows, dances and sporting activities will be performed in order to attract the attention of people. Organising trips for key personnel in the communities to visit and appreciate the reserve, aiming at influencing their subjects to help protect Wildlife. Major concern is on animal species that risk being wiped out like Zebra and Antelope due to heavy poaching.

Challenge

Poaching in reserve areas is the most harmful to the destruction of Wildlife by communities. Some iconic species of wildlife (i.e. Zebra), their populations are almost erased due to poaching. Poachers use a variety of weapons to kill these Wildlife in protected areas and they used a number of ways to poach such as dogs, snares, guns, bows & arrows, spears & clubs, nets and pits among others. Boarder Network WE has observed that these poachers come from communities surrounding the reserve.

Solution

Boarder Network WE will conduct activities in communities surrounding earmarked reserves that will include civic education meetings where dramas, shows, dances and sporting activities will be performed in order to attract the attention of people. Organising trips for key personnel in the communities to visit and appreciate reserves, aiming at influencing their subjects to help protect Wildlife and Environment. Encourage reforestation, best farming practices and protecting strims from pollution.

Long-Term Impact

(4) Reafforestation surrounding earmarked reserves (i.e. minimum of 1 million trees). (5) Eliminate deforestation in surrounding communities. (6) Restore river backs vegetation. (7) Eliminate river pollution in surrounding communities. (8) Improved standards of lives in the surrounding communities.
