In the North Western zone of Tigray there are many women who are victims of sexual abuse, domestic violence, trafficking, harmful traditional practices and after the 2020-2022 armed conflict the number of female headed households have risen dramatically, leaving many families in destitution. These are the women which we help in a holistic way. We do counseling, rehabilitation, economic empowerment, parenting skills training and lifeskills. Anything to get these women back on their feet.
Women suffer greatly in our area. They carry all the burdens of the family but after the armed conflict of 2020-2022, their suffering has greatly increased. Many women lost their husbands and sons, many were raped in horrific ways and still have not had the courage to come forward and seek help. As peace is still very fragile, many displaced people still live in camps where they are exposed to rape and violence and they are exposed to trafficking. Women have lost their dignity and are destitute.
Abraham's Oasis is working in a holistic way to help these women get back on their feet, empower them to be the family leaders, work on prevention in the community, work with community structures, help them with business skills training and seed money. We provide counselling in the communities and where needed we admit women into our safehouse for a 3 month rehabilitation program. We want to restore the dignity of women so families are strengthened and communities become safe havens again.
We will do prevention and intervention which will have a positive impact on the women, their children and thus the community as a whole. By strengthening commmunity structures we will provide services at grassroots level so communities learn to address and solve at their level. The impact will be stronger communities where women and children feel safe and empowered.
