They come, completely broken, frightened and without hope for the future.
They are heroes as they have gone through unimaginale trauma but they got up and started to look for help. The first steps were taken towards healing. Their hurting bodies were examined, where possible they received treatment. Physical healing started to take place. Their mental scars are a different story, some can mange by themselves with a little bit of counselling, for some the trauma is more than they can handle. They come, deeply depressed, some psychotic, some suicidal....they come for 3 months to our refuge.
They come in frightened and scarred, they are withdrawn, some come with their children, some come with unborn babies. They come and we show them love and dignity. We offer them a helping hand through counselling services for them and their children, we take them for medical appointments, our midwife keeps an eye on the pregnant women. They start to take part in healing activities like coloring and crafts....slowly they move from being withdrawn to participatory and on to being hopeful and happy. There are bouts of laughter coming from the refuge a sign of healing taking place.
Empowered women leave, with new found business skills, ready to face the world again and able to provide for their family.
These are my heroes, women who have taken the courage to look for help and taken the hand who reached out to them!
