Summary

The Project seek to provide sustainable income for 50 vulnerable women and their families who are affected by climate change and illegal mining in Ghana. The project will construct a modern goat ranch facility that can house 100 to 800 goats, providing training, veterinary support, and purchase 30 improved breed goats to start a goat ranch. These women are the poorest sections of their deprived community. The Akuraase Non-Profit Organization supports and serves as an incubator for the project.

Challenge

This project targets vulnerable women from Hwidiem, Ghana. The women in hwidiem, a deprived community, have traditionally relied on crop cultivation, primarily subsistence farming, as their main source of livelihood. However, climate change, erratic rainfall patterns, environmental degradation, and the activities of illegal miners who have invaded farmlands have led to a sharp decline in farm yields and loss of income, causing a heavy food and financial burden on women in the community.

Solution

This project will construct a modern goat ranch facility for 50 impoverished women farmers in Hwidiem, rural Ghana, who have been affected by climate change. The project has secured a 2.5-acre site. The project will provide these women with training in sustainable goat farming practices, veterinary support, modern goat-keeping structures, and improved breed goats for a sustainable livelihood. The beneficiaries will be grouped and allocated portions of the land to raise their goats.

Long-Term Impact

1. Help the beneficiaries own income-generating assets (goats) for their lives 2. Earn $45 to $100 per month. This is over 300% of their current monthly income. 3. Be able to provide three-square nutritious meals for their families. 4. Enroll children in school and vocational training 5. Contribute to food security and sustainable meat and milk supply in Ghana 6. Contribute to supporting the construction of similar projects in other communities to benefit additional vulnerable women.
