Women's Empowerment Group

By Elizabeth Appleyard | Program Administrator

One of the ways AIL seeks to empower Afghan women is through providing training to women at all educational levels. The Women’s Empowerment Group was formed to aid highly educated women to succeed in their chosen fields giving them added training in leadership, advocacy and support of their peers. The program runs for a year with the women continuing as part of the group after that.

In February, the group discussed planning, management and organizing.  Goal setting and planning how to achieve the goal is important as is careful time management especially for women who balance domestic responsibilities. The other aspects include: control and monitoring and self-confidence and leadership, to guide a project and its people to stated goal.

The women discussed the traits of a good manager which include the skills of: punctuality, patience, motivation, time management, strategic planning, evaluating, communication and optimism and a base of knowledge. Traits to be avoided are: selfishness, bad temper, irresponsibility, pride, discouraging attitude, bias, judgmental, anxious, hurried and bossy.

The group works on how to be a good manager and how to manage tendencies to unhelpful traits. More senior women act as role models and everyone contributes their life experiences in whatever management roles they have taken on. Group learning is effective and the women provide support to each other.

The 2021 Sakena Fund annual report is attached and we hope you find it interesting.

Thank you for your support which continues to be vital to helping Afghan women thrive.
