Meet Janet

Janet

These Numbers Have Faces believes strongly women are the secret weapon to fighting poverty. We work hard to make sure that at least half of the students in our University Leadership Program are women. Currently, 57% of our students are female. These young women are poised to lead their communities and countries to a new era of peace and prosperity. Through access to a university education, Leadership Development Workshops, and our women's mentorship program, we empower Africa's brightest young women to cultivate thriving communities. We also recognize that, if we are working to empower strong female leaders in a culture where gender roles remain very traditional, we must also work with the young men to learn how to work well with and alongside strong, empowered women. Janet is a wonderful example of the young women in our program.

Janet was born into a family of seven children. Janet studied primary school at Kashenyi Integrated School, where she got 9 aggregates in the national primary examination. She then attended secondary school at Kagarama where she completed school with 73 aggregates in physics, chemistry and biology. Janet is now in her first year at the College of Medicine and Health Sciences, Department of Dental Therapy.

Janet’s future goals are to start her own clinic where she can provide employment opportunities for other people, helping to improve their standard of living, ultimately  leading to the development of her country. Janet also hopes to provide better health services to people in her community, especially dental treatments.

Janet recently shared this about her experiences as a TNHF scholar:

“Being part of the These Numbers Have Faces family has been one of the greatest blessings of my life. This community has truly changed me in ways I can see and feel. Through the monthly Leadership Development Workshops, I’ve had the chance to learn from incredible facilitators who’ve helped me believe in myself and grow into the person I am today. The skills and experiences I’ve gained have been life-changing. Because of this, I found the courage to run for leadership roles, like the Treasurer of the Rwanda Dental Student Association and Minister in Charge of Gender and Protocol at the University of Rwanda, Remera Campus – and I was elected by my peers to both positions! The values of integrity and trustworthiness I learned from TNHF have been key to my success in these roles.

But it doesn’t stop there. The leadership lessons I’ve learned have inspired me to pay it forward. On campus, I work to motivate others, especially young women, to believe in themselves and take on leadership roles. I’ve also been actively involved in fighting gender-based injustices through awareness sessions on campus and in nearby communities. These efforts have already made a positive impact, and I’m so grateful to TNHF for giving me the tools to create change. I’ll always carry these lessons with me and do my best to make a difference wherever I go. Thank you, TNHF family, for everything!”

Currently, Janet and the rest of the young women in our University Leadership Program are busy with their second semester. Doreen and her fellow TNHF students are also facilitating their Community Impact Projects for this academic year.

These Community Impact Projects are a key element of our success. These projects require our students to take what they are learning in their classrooms and what they are learning in our Leadership Development Workshops and then apply it to real-life needs within their. We ask all of our students to identify, plan, and then devote at least 50 hours each academic year completing a Community Impact Project that will make a transformational difference in their communities. Over the past 5 years, our students have impacted significantly the lives of almost 30,000 people!

Here are just six examples of last year’s projects: 1. Eradicating malnutrition in Rwanda.   2. Teaching female secondary students the importance of social justice through debates designed to encourage public speaking and critical thinking skills. 3. Teaching computer skills to young girls. 4. Teaching reproductive health to female secondary students to reduce the risk of early pregnancy and dropping out of school. 5. Working with vulnerable families to improve their nutrition through kitchen gardens. 6. Teaching female secondary students how to build an excellent career profile, including an effective CV, cover letter, and LinkedIn profile, as well as teaching effective interviewing skills.
