educate. works to empower young people in Honduras through community-driven educational initiatives. Alongside our scholarship programme for high-potential youth in the rural department of Santa Barbara, we run the department's first Youth Centre and Municipal Library! This centre provides 100+ young leaders with educational opportunities and trainings in entrepreneurship, community engagement and global citizenship. The centre also acts as a local library, open to all.
Honduras has the highest rate of economic inequality in Latin America, and over 60% of the population live in poverty. Only half of all students carry on their education past 6th grade, and the prospect of university is off the cards for most of the country's youth. Without opportunities to study, young people are disproportionately affected by the country's debilitating poverty, overwhelming violence and systematic inequality.
educate. provides opportunities for ambitious, high-potential youth from low-income backgrounds to attend university or other forms of tertiary education, and we work to support locally-led spaces of community engagement. Through our Youth Centre we provide a space for our scholars and other young people to gather for educational workshops, leadership and entrepreneurship programmes, community engagement activities, and peer-to-peer mentorship and tutoring.
The project provides 100+ local youth from disadvantaged backgrounds with opportunities to learn, lead and grow. In a country deeply affected by political and social crises, educate. believes in the power of young people to drive long-lasting change in their communities.
