Human Rights & Science partners with Youth Growth Smart Boda Boda (YGSB) in Kenya to empower motorcycletaxi entrepreneurs. Founded by Dennis Mwebi, YGSB has delivered a KES 170 000 loan to help riders purchase and maintain motorcycles, boosting service quality and income. Through financial loans and business training, we tackle rising fuel and repair costs-enabling riders to scale operations, improve safety, and drive local economic growth.
Boda Boda riders struggle with volatile fuel prices (KES 170/L), expensive repairs (tyres, parts), and limited access to capital. Without affordable loans or business skills, many cannot maintain their bikes, forcing downtime and lost earnings. This undermines riders' ability to serve communities with reliable, safe transport and threatens their long-term financial stability.
By providing YGSB riders with affordable loans to cover essential expenses-fuel, tyre replacements, and maintenance kits-alongside hands-on business training in budgeting, cost management, and customer service. Ongoing mentorship helps riders optimize routes and repayment planning, ensuring continuous, reliable operations, higher earnings, and safer, more professional transport services.
With stable financing and solid business practices, riders can sustain daily operations, doubling their active service days from 20 to 40 per month. Increased earnings enable timely loan repayment, build creditworthiness, and fund additional loans-spurring fleet expansion. Over time, this fosters safer transport, creates new jobs (dispatchers, mechanics), and strengthens Kenya's informal economy.
