Warm Clothes for Homeless People -- Winter 2022

By Maki Yukevich | Youth Impact Coordinator

Not too many people have foreseen that we are still dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic situation in 2022 a couple of years ago. It is still impacting our everyday life. We hope you and your loved ones are in good health.

Given the unprecedented situation, where it has been difficult to hold in-person activities, Hands On Tokyo is striving to serve our community as best as we can. We are grateful for your continuous support to help us continue addressing the needs of our community amid the COVID-19 pandemic. With your support, we will continue to create innovative projects and provide services to help our community transition to “New-Normal” with and beyond COVID-19 crisis. None of our services would have been possible without your commitment and trust towards our organization. We are extremely grateful to have your support through this platform to innovate different types of services to meet the needs of our community.

Since our last report we have developed several Youth led virtual and other projects. We have discussions with high school and college students on a regular basis to explore innovative ideas to promote volunteerism and encourage our youth leaders to continue serving for the community during these unprecedented times.

Among many of our Youth led activities, we would like to highlight this project that was planned and executed by members of our Youth Impact Program.

One of our Youth Impact high school members met a homeless person who was wearing shorts on a snowy cold afternoon. She immediately brought it up during our weekly meeting, hoping to do something to help homeless people who are surviving in this cold weather. The Youth Impact high school team quickly responded, came up with the plan to conduct "Warm Clothes Drive" at their own schools. They also planned to handout the warm clothes that they collected by themselves, instead of donating clothes to the organizations that support homeless people in the city. Then another member said she knew someone who distributes food and clothes every Saturday morning at Yoyogi Park, which is one of the largest parks in the city of Tokyo. The Youth members contacted this person and  start communicate with him to choose the best time and place to handout warm clothes. Instead of just walking into the park and start handing clothes out without any plans, there were dates and times that many of homeless people in the park come and gather at a certain place to wait for the distribution.

Observing their activity, I was happy to see these high school students reaching out to the people who already know how to run things. We all know it's valuable to try to do things yourself to learn more about the service, however, sometimes it's important to communicate and ask for suggestions and receive advice from those who have the knowledge already. In this case, acting with speed would definitely benefit the homeless people at the park because having warm clothes were an immediate issue for them.

Below is the report of the handsouts of warm clothes to homeless people from one of our active Youth Impact members.

"Today, we went to Yoyogi Park, where a number of homeless people could be seen. Guided by the strong will to help these people, we decided to collect some clothes and donate them. We went throughout the park, handing out supplies, whether it was a mask, a handwarmer, a banana, or a piece of clothing. We successfully distributed everything that we had brought with us. It was amazing seeing how people lined up for us to give them a cup of coffee, and their smiles after receiving supplies warmed my heart beyond words. I realized then and there that it was not about what you give, but about the thought of giving. We were giving these people much more than just clothes and coffee. We were giving them hope. Making them see that they matter to us and that they are cared for. I believe that this event gave the people as well as us -the members of the Hands on Tokyo Youth Programme- a sense of purpose and belonging. While we made the people feel loved, we were also able to see what our real purpose is: Giving people the gift of hope." -- A.S. Youth Impact High School Member

Hands On Tokyo’s Youth Impact Program guides the youth leaders to design, plan and execute their own program. This project is a great example of the process where youth leaders took all the initiatives on program planning and execution with the guidance of Hands On Tokyo’s staff. The youth members continue to learn through this process and ultimately advocate as a leader for the cause they care for, which eventually makes a difference in our society. Our youth leaders are able to complete and learn through these cycles to accomplish our mission.

All of the work we do would not be possible without the support from you, our donors. Through your generosity we will empower even more of the youth, and together continue to make a difference in our community!

Thank you for your continued support and trusting our organization to keep striving through the tough times together with our community.

We wish for everyone's safety and health.
