Hands On Tokyo Youth Impact Spring 2021 Report

With the COVID-19 pandemic impacting everyday life, we hope you and your loved ones are in good spirits and health.

Since our last report we have developed several youths led virtual projects. We have discussions with high school and college students on regular basis to explore on innovative ideas to promote volunteerism and encourage our youth leaders to continue serving for the community during these unprecedented times.

Some of our innovative projects are short exercise videos for elderlies, where youth volunteers show-cased various types of exercise that elderlies could practice inside their room. These videos not only helped elderlies to remain active during the pandemic, it also served as a tool for inter-generational communication. We plan to develop more innovative videos and virtual sessions to engage more elderly population and make them feel positive. Our youth volunteers also developed English lessons videos and virtual content for children’s homes to make online learning fun for the children. Many of our youth volunteers were engaged in our ‘in-person” English sessions before the pandemic. These leaders are building up the ideas from their past experiences to upgrade the quality of digital contents to engage and educate the children virtually.

During our virtual networking sessions, we continuously brainstorm in innovative ways to serve community while ensuring the safety of both our volunteers and the community. Recently, our youth leaders are planning Virtual Talent Show project, to continue having fun interactive activities at senior homes and children’s homes. Our youth volunteers will show-case their talents (such as singing, playing musical instruments, skateboarding, magic, cooking, gymnastics or other forms of entertainment) in a short video (up to 5 mins), compile and edit them into different categories and make them virtually accessible to respective community partners.

Currently, our members are planning and brainstorming ideas to develop project that helps special needs youth to use technology and computer skills to communicate and connect in a digital era. Our youth leaders will assist our virtual PC Literacy sessions for individuals with special needs and develop a communication platform for them to use and develop their computational skills.

While our youth volunteers are utilizing and developing their technical skills as well as the ability to innovate projects during the pandemic, they will continue to engage in the following:

-         Develop educational/recreational materials and digital content for our community partners in need.

-         Design their own project of interest, plan for the project, decide the fund allocation along with fundraising activity.

-         Foster opportunities on youth supported digital content development and manage social media pages.

-         Research and expand popular projects among youths to engage and mobilize larger group of youths.

Even after it is seen as safe to offer in-person projects again, we plan to continue these new projects in addition to the in-person activities that we have developed during the pandemic. We will continue leveraging our youth leaders mobilization in finding alternative solutions to existing challenges in continuing serving our community, using digital tools and data to engage larger group of volunteers to serve in our community and build resilience.

“My most memorable time volunteering at Hands On Tokyo was when I volunteered during quarantine. I helped to make videos and it made me realize that you can still help the wider community even if you are not there physically.”-Youth Volunteer Leader

All of the work we do would not be possible without the support from you, our donors. Through your generosity we will empower even more of the youth, and together continue to make a difference in our community!

We wish everyone's safety and health during the unprecedented situation.

Please stay safe!
