Strengthening Conservation on the Ground

As we step into the new year, Community Protection team conducted an field mission in Vân Ho, Son La Province, focusing on both wildlife monitoring and preparation for upcoming forest restoration activities.

Monitoring the Vân Ho Gibbons

During the trip, the team carried out a field survey to monitor the Northern White-cheeked Gibbon population in Vân Ho forest. Through direct observation, the team recorded updated information on group movements, forest conditions, and potential threats.

These regular surveys are essential to ensure that conservation strategies remain responsive and effective. Monitoring helps us better understand population changes, protect critical habitats, and strengthen community-based protection efforts for this endangered primate species.

Preparing for Forest Restoration in 2026

PanNature met with the Forest Protection Management Board and commune leaders to discuss plans for forest restoration activities in 2026.

The meetings focused on:

Identifying priority restoration sites
Strengthening coordination among local authorities and community groups
Ensuring long-term protection and maintenance of restored areas
Integrating restoration with sustainable livelihood support

Close collaboration with local stakeholders is a key foundation for successful forest recovery. By working together from the planning stage, we aim to ensure that restoration efforts are both ecologically effective and socially sustainable.

Looking Ahead

This field trip marks an important step in strengthening conservation action in Vân Ho. From monitoring endangered gibbons to preparing new restoration sites, our work continues to connect biodiversity protection with community engagement.

New Year Updates

A Hopeful Start to the New Year

The new year has begun with wonderful news from the forests of Vân Ho, Son La Province. The White-cheeked Gibbon family has welcomed a new member —a rare and hopeful sign for this endangered species.

During a recent field visit, PanNature staff and primate photographers observed a group of White-cheeked Gibbons, including a female carrying a newborn estimated to be just a few weeks old. This precious moment brings the total population in Vân Ho to 19 individuals, up from 18 recorded during PanNature’s comprehensive survey in July 2024. Today, four small groups continue to survive within this forest landscape.

Each newborn gibbon is powerful evidence of the value of protected forests—and a strong reminder that conservation efforts truly make a difference.

Ready for 2026 - Growing our conservation impact

As we wrap up the final quarter of 2025, PanNature is taking time to reflect on our progress and prepare for an exciting new year of conservation work. Thanks to your support, we are stepping into 2026 with stronger foundations, renewed energy, and expanding ambitions for forest restoration and community-based conservation.

The First Green Shoots Are Up!

In the late autumn days, as the forest rains had just subsided, PanNature staff set out once again to survey the forest restoration areas planted in 2025. A promising sign—the first green shoots have appeared!

Under the forest canopy, young sprouts of Cinamon, Bamboo,... are taking root strongly, beginning to “patch” the once-bare mountain slopes.

We are also beginning new field trips to assess restoration areas and prepare for next year’s activities.

New Project Site Office Coming in 2026

Following the establishment of our site office in Vân Ho (Northeast Vietnam), we are planning to launch a new office in Pleiku City in Vietnam’s Central Highlands.

This new office will allow us to work more closely with local communities, expand our forest restoration initiatives, and strengthen sustainable livelihood programs throughout the Highland region.

Celebrating 20 Years of PanNature

This year also marked a special moment—PanNature’s 20th anniversary.

We gathered staff from different generations to reflect on our journey, share lessons, and reaffirm our mission for the decades ahead.
