Objects within globalgiving.org

Below are brief descriptions of terminology we use at globalgiving.org to describe the people in our community and objects in the GlobalGiving world. These terms will help you to navigate which code you want and what you want it to do.

Donor

A donor is registered at globalgiving.org to either participate in the GlobalGiving community or donate to a project. Most donors have created a public profile to share the projects they support with others in the community. Not all donors have given to a project.

My Profile

My Profile is a public profile that is created for donors when they create an account. Profiles can be made private (in which case, the donor is called an anonymous donor). Donors can add as much or as little information as they like to their profiles. Each project page showcases the donors who have given to that project. By clicking on the donor icon from project pages, donors and project leaders can go to any non-anonymous donor's profile page.

Donation

Donors can choose from a number of "donation options" provided on each project page, or can enter an amount of their choice. Donations can also be made in honor of someone else, in which case, the honoree is sent an electronic "gift" card telling them that Tom Smith made a donation in their honor. Once a donation is made using a major credit card, PayPal, or check, the GlobalGiving Foundation processes the transaction, provides the donor with a tax receipt, and sends funds on to the project contact.

Photos

Each project on GlobalGiving has one or more photos associated with it, posted by the Project Sponsor or Leader. When there are multiple photos posted, they run in a slide show format.

Projects

GlobalGiving is a marketplace of project listings. Each project has a specific focus, set of beneficiaries, and funding need. Each project is assigned a unique Project ID, and is able to accept project donations.

Project Partners

Projects are posted to globalgiving.org by one of two types of Project Partners-either directly by a Project Leader, in which case GlobalGiving provides all vetting and validation services, or by a Project Sponsor who posts a project on behalf of a Project Leader.

Project Leaders initiate and manage projects within local communities. Project Leaders might work for large, international organizations, or may be social entrepreneurs - individuals with innovative ideas for addressing issues within their communities.

Project Sponsors work with GlobalGiving to source high-quality international social, economic development, and environmental projects. These experienced, respected nonprofit organizations vouch for the projects they post on globalgiving.org, working with Project Leaders to ensure that projects meet high standards, are well run, and are in compliance with all international grant-making and anti-terrorist guidelines.

Project Entry System

The Project Entry (PE) System is accessible to approved Project Sponsors and Leaders for entering or updating project information.

Topic

Projects on GlobalGiving are categorized into topic areas like education, economic development, and environment.

Gift Cards

GlobalGiving offers customizable mail-able and email-able gift cards. Gift Cards work like gift certificates-the receiver is provided with a special code that they can use upon check out, once they've chosen a project to which they want to donate.

Giving Cart

Like a shopping cart, the Giving Cart allows donors to add donations to one or more projects, or Gift Cards, to a cart for checkout.

Project Title

Each project has a descriptive title, entered by the Project Sponsor or Project Leader into the Project Entry System.

Who is Running this Project? (Project Contact and Organization)

This is the name and contact information for the person in charge of communication for the project (sometimes the Project Leader, sometimes another person employed by the project) as well as information on the organization overseeing the project.

Project need and beneficiaries

Describes the issue(s) being addressed by the project and the people who benefit most from work being done. Information is entered by the Project Sponsor or Leader through the Project Entry system.

"How you can help" (donation options)

A donor can make a one-time donation by choosing from a variety of donation options provided by the Project Sponsor or Leader, each tied to a specific deliverable, by entering any amount of their choosing, or by making a recurring donation (recurring donations automatically charge the donor's credit card for a specific amount each month up until the point the project is fully funded or retired). Donation options are entered by the project sponsor or leader through the project entry system. Note: recurring donations are not yet available through the API.

Project summary

A brief description of project purpose and beneficiaries.

Project location (country)

Provides a brief description of both country location and project location within GlobalGiving topic areas. Also provides a Google Maps-generated visual location on the globe (based on coordinates entered by the project.)

Funding information

Includes information on "Total Funding Received to Date," "Remaining Goal to be Funded," and "Total Funding Goal" for the project.

Additional documentation

Project Sponsors and Leaders have the option of posting additional documents, in all formats, to this area. They can be additional information on the project, awards won, articles, white papers, etc.

Resources

Project Sponsors and Leaders post additional information about the project and links to things like the project/organization's website.

Project updates

Captures the date project information was last edited or updated ("Last Updated") as well as the date the project was originally added to GlobalGiving ("Date added to GlobalGiving").

Latest Update from the Field (progress reports)

Project Sponsors/Leaders regularly post project updates to communicate to donors progress made on projects to which they've donated or in which they are interested. As new updates are posted, older updates are archived in "Updates from the Field". Interested community members can subscribe to email updates or RSS feeds for "Updates from the Field."

Retired projects

Some projects on GlobalGiving are "retired"-or taken off of the site-once they have reached their funding goals, are completed, or are unsuccessful in obtaining donations after one year. Many projects on GlobalGiving are ongoing, meaning they do not have a specific completion date or goal and are more continuous in nature.
