Creating a New Narrative

The challenges indigenous women face in pursuing entrepreneurship are diverse and complex. They are facing are many because of their identities as both female and indigenous. Developing solutions that address their unique needs represents an opportunity to provide them with the benefits of entrepreneurship, the obstacles to achieving business success, and current initiatives to help women overcome these challenges.

Entrepreneurship represents an opportunity for indigenous women to improve their lives by cultivating financial independence and stability.

Greater access to technology to communicate is one of the challenges they face. Having the necessary equipment allows them to access it, allowing them to stay in their communities and get the necessary training in digital marketing.

Miacaela from the community of Aldama, Cooperativa Luchetik

“For me it means learning things I didn't know and being able to apply them to Juxta, although I still need to keep learning so that I can share them with my fellow artisans.”

Teach them marketing strategies to publicize their brand in media and Internet channels, create links and attract new customers in a massive way regardless of geographic location.

Juana from the community Santiago el Pinar, el Choyo, Cooperative Choy Spolavil

“Digital presence is important because of the high number of people who use these media daily, and we can use it as a showcase to display our products and our lifestyle.”

Though it can be a difficult journey, entrepreneurship can improve the socio-economic circumstances of individuals and entire communities.

Maria from the community San Juan Cancuc, Cooperative Yaxinal Antsetik

“One obstacle is that it was a little difficult for me, but it is good to take the workshops to strengthen myself and to be able to share this new knowledge with my colleagues.”

When indigenous women improve their lives through entrepreneurship, the entire community benefits because of their increased status, as they now act as inspirational role models in their communities.
