Accessibility guide for Egyptian Underground/Metro

By Lamise ElBetar | Project leader

Metro Accessibility - Line 1
Metro Accessibility - Line 1

Dear all Alhassan Foundation’s believers & supporters,

It’s our pleasure to announce that we have launched the 1st manual (guide) for Egyptian Underground/Metro’s accessibility for wheelchair users made by wheelchair users themselves. This guide wasn’t the result of our efforts as a foundation alone. It’s also the collective efforts of a group of our esteemed members (wheelchair users) who surveyed the metro stations themselves to assess its accessibility to be able to give an honest evaluation for each station and whether it’s wheelchair friendly or not.

Cairo, the capital of Egypt has 3 lines for the underground/metro. We found out that the first line accessibility level is the worst of all, which is less than almost 11.76% while the 2nd line accessibility was almost 70%. On the other hand, the best accessibility level was in the 3rd line which is still under construction (100% accessibility). This assessment is only for wheelchair accessibility and not any other disability (deaf/blind). We also can’t claim that these percentages are as accurate or applicable as we can expect due to external factors such as:

  1. Elevator is not working in most cases.
  2. Person in charge is not available unless being personally called to help.

Yet we promise you advocate for wheelchair users in Egypt to have the best accessibility that they need & deserve. Also, we are planning to turn this accessibility manual to be a mobile app so much more people can use it and benefit from it.

We would like to thank each and every one of you for your support. We urge you to continue supporting our cause and be a loyal donor through subscribing to a monthly recurring donation which will help securing more accessible transportation for wheelchair users in Egypt. Please visit our Facebook page to read other success stories:

Thank you for believing in the differently abled. :)
