Ahh, the lynx. The myth. The legend.
Yes, lynxes are quite mysterious animals. It’s difficult to see them in the wild – they are quiet and secretive, have large individual territories and are active mostly at night. Sometimes this makes studying them and determining their populations a challenge. Recently many people have been asking us whether the lynx may have already returned to the Bulgarian wilderness.
Are there lynxes in Bulgaria?
The short answer is yes, but some clarifications are needed.
In the past, there were many lynxes in Bulgaria. However, the species has long been considered extinct in the country. The latest official record of its presence is from the 1940s, when German soldiers are believed to have shot the last wild lynx in the Parangalitsa reserve in Rila mountain.
Recently, however, more and more evidence has appeared that lynxes are again present in Bulgaria - paw prints, images from cameratraps, accounts of people who have seen them in Western Bulgaria. Experts believe these lynxes are individuals from populations in Romania, Serbia and North Macedonia crossing into Bulgarian territory.
Unfortunately, at the moment, we cannot speak of a lynx population in Bulgaria. There is no evidence of breeding lynx in the country yet. It is assumed that one of the reasons for this is the illegal killing of these animals for hunting trophies.
The lynx is a critically endangered species according to the Red Data Book and its hunting is prohibited by law but, sadly, this does not stop poachers.
What does WWF do to help bring the lynx back permanently?
The preferred home of the lynx is old natural forests. For years, WWF Bulgaria has been dedicated to their study and protection. We are also working for better habitat connectivity for large carnivores. In regions where ecological connectivity is intact, animals like the lynx can find food, shelter and mates – and that is critical for their survival. We also actively fight poaching and work to prevent human-wildlife conflict.
We believe these are key activities that one day will contribute to the lynx's permanent return to its home - the majestic forests of Bulgaria.
Our work is possible because of our amazing supporters who love wildlife as much as us and want to protect it.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for supporting our mission!
