AETHA shelter homes: in need of some improvements

By Julia Martinez | Project coordinator

Organ transplants happen in hospitals and centres that have the special permission and the expertise to do them. Those are usually located in bigger cities or capital cities of a country and its different regions, so they might be far away from patients that live in other cities or towns.

Renting a hotel room during the entire process of a transplantation can be a big expense that some people might not be able to afford. To reduce the stress and the financial complications that a situation like this might cause, AETHA (Aragon Liver Transplant Patients Association), from Spain, offers to its members and their families a safe space during the transplant process and the recovery.

As family support is necessary for the complete recovery of transplanted patients, AETHA created The Transitional Accommodation Project-Shelter homes of AETHA. This project was born from the need of families that had to travel to Zaragoza, capital of the region of Aragón, due to their medical situation in their residential area -generally municipalities and rural areas throughout Aragón.

AETHA offers these services to their members and their families free of charge, thanks to donations like yours. Your donations have a huge impact on society, and specifically for patients who need a liver transplant in Spain. Currently, with the COVID-19 pandemic still going, these donations are very important.

Zaragoza is one of the regions of Spain with the most cases of Covid-19, and the decrease of hospitalization is going slowly. In this first quarter of 2021 the occupancy of AETHA's reception flats has been constant.

AETHA volunteers monitor users by phone and, if necessary, accompaniment of people staying in the flats. Because of the pandemic, there is little or no face-to-face monitoring of the situation. AETHA volunteers are people with liver transplants and, as the floors are full of people who come and go from hospitals, the less they approach the shelter homes, the better.

This year AETHA has set a goal: to buy household items for the shelter homes (bed linen, towels, blankets, new duvets) and kitchen equipment/utensils that have suffered some kind of wear. In addition, one entire flat will be painted.

All of these changes will help improve the quality of the stay of families with a member who is going through a transplantation process. And these changes will become a reality thanks to your help, support and donation received through GlobalGiving. The families, AETHA and us will be forever grateful for your incalculable support.
