By Elizabeth A Appleyard | Program Administrator
AIL has programs operating in 11 provinces with many in the Kabul and Herat areas. There are 271 students enrolled in computer training classes of which 184 are male and 87 female. This is a highly marketable skill and provides job opportunity for graduates.
“I am Ahmad a student of the computer class of this center. When I came to this center, I did not know anything about computer programs. After several months with the help of my teacher and my working hard I learned several computer programs such as: Windows, MS. Word and MS. Excel. Now I can solve my problems related to the computer. Thank you AIL for providing such opportunity for the students of this area. I really think I will be able to get a job one day with this skill.”

“My name is Faruq. I am one of the students of a computer class of Shakardara learning center. I am from a poor family, my father was a government employee but lost his job. My mother is a housewife and I have three small sisters. One day one of my friends said something about Shakardara Learning Center, I went there and enrolled myself in a computer class. After six months, I learned several computer programs and I managed to get a job in a school. I am so happy that I can earn money and help my family using my new skill. It has made a huge difference to our family’s economic situation.”

Computing class graduates
Recently, AIL staff traveled from the head office in Kabul out to Daikundi Province. This is one of the most deprived areas and lacks facilities. It is a 24 hour walk from Kabul and many of the roads are difficult for vehicles to pass. The people are very poor but eager to learn and improve their lives. AIL provided a series of teacher training seminars, workshops and delivered food aid.
The staff were delighted to attend the graduation ceremony for the computer class at one of the Daikundi Province learning centers. 100 students, including male and female, received their certificates of achievement and all were very appreciative of the through grounding in computing skills that they had received. AIL started this center 10 years ago and thousands of students have graduated from it with a range of employable skills.
Mohammad said, “Students are happy to learn computing and most have gained practical work skills in computing. I do computer printing works in the city of Nili of the province. I am paid 7 thousand Afghani salary each month and this means I am self-supporting and can help my elderly father. This course changed my life.”
