A Clean Solar Alternative to Kerosene Lamps, Nepal

Solar Photovoltaic (PV) lamps were distributed to each of the 20 members of Shree Cheuri Division Women Group in a remote village of Kalikhola, Rapti Municipality-13, Chitwan in central Nepal, where there is no access to electricity and which lies in a very difficult geographical terrain (very hilly area). They were also provided orientation on renewable energy; solar energy, how to properly use the solar lamp, and its simple maintenance.

Ms. Praja, president of Shree Cheuri Division Women Group shared, “the support of clean and portable lamps allows children to do their homework after dusk and provides residents with a cleaner source of lighting for their homes. Solar PV lamps have now replaced kerosene lamps significantly reducing health hazards such as burns and toxic fume inhalation. We are very thankful for the support.” 

ECCA has been promoting the use of affordable and much more sustainable solar lights, to replace kerosene lights that are used in most houses where electricity is not available.

Kalitar village of Rapti Municipality-13 of Chitwan district in central Nepal is the home of indigenous Chepang people. The village struggles with various development constraints, and no connectivity with electricity is one of them. National grid electricity has not reached there because of difficult geographical terrain.

ECCA mobilized the local women, helped them establish women group and provided various trainings for livelihood development. ECCA also provided solar photovoltaic lamps. Basic level sensitization was also done on the use of solar light. The lamp has benefited the entire family in their daily lives. Now the children can study well in the evening as well.
