Thanks to your generous support, Katherine was able to conduct critical field research at our Amazon Rainforest Field Station, contributing to the development of a local conservation plan for the near-threatened Colombian Jaguar (Panthera onca). This iconic species, while powerful and elusive, faces increasing threats from habitat loss, poaching, and human-wildlife conflict.

But Katherine’s work didn’t stop with data collection. As part of her research, she also led conservation education initiatives in surrounding villages, building local awareness and empowering communities to take an active role in protecting jaguars and their rainforest habitat.

At Women for Conservation, we believe that empowering women in science is essential for a sustainable future. Today, we are thrilled to share a moment of celebration and hope as we spotlight three remarkable women selected for our “Women in Research and Science” scholarship program. These inspiring scientists are embarking on vital research projects that aim to protect two of Colombia’s critically endangered species: the Blue-billed Curassow (Crax alberti) and the Magdalena Spider Monkey (Ateles hybridus).

These three dedicated researchers—Katiana, Dahiana , and Laura Sofía —will conduct their groundbreaking studies at the ProAves El Paujil Reserve, located in the lush Serranía de las Quinchas of the Magdalena Valley. Their work will deepen scientific understanding and inform conservation strategies for preserving these precious species and their habitats.

This initiative is not just about research; it’s about creating opportunities for women in science to lead the way in wildlife conservation. Supporting these scholars is an investment in both the preservation of biodiversity and the empowerment of women as leaders and change-makers in their field.

Meet Our Scholars:

• Katiana, a biologist from Universidad Nacional de Colombia, will focus on the population status and ecology of the Magdalena Spider Monkey.
• Dahiana, an environmental engineering student from Fundación Universitaria de San Gil, will study population density and group dynamics of the Magdalena Spider Monkey.
• Laura Sofía, studying biology education at Universidad Distrital Francisco José de Caldas, will research habitat use by the Blue-billed Curassow to develop effective conservation strategies.

Their projects exemplify the commitment and expertise women bring to conservation science. Through their tireless efforts, we are building a future where women’s participation in research strengthens global conservation efforts.
