Engage Globally educates over 400 children in community learning centers in rural Northern Ghana. We also support the education of youth, young adults, and women in our nine partner villages. This project will enhance learning through arts, culture, and environmental programs including teaching of traditional basket weaving and dance, along with sustainable farming. Additionally, we hope to establish the first community libraries in the region using books on African culture and conservation.
In rural Northern Ghana, adult literacy is rare, with women over the age of 15, on average, having attended less than two years of school. For children, primary schools are often overcrowded, under-resourced, and lacking in teachers. Additionally, curriculums frequently emphasize memorization in English, when children speak a regional language. To address severe poverty and inequality, a quality education that enables children and adults to value their art, culture, and environment is needed.
By creating educational opportunities that emphasize traditional and regional arts, crafts, and dance, we actively engage children in learning, while also contributing to cultural preservation. Extending these efforts to adults through the creation of lending libraries, sustainable farming instruction, and literacy classes will provide an opportunity for those who were never able to attend school to gain valuable skills.
This project offers several positive long-term impacts including: 1. Improved educational achievement for 400 children 2. Literacy skills among adults in our nine partner communities including the ability of mothers to be able to read with their children 3. Expanded knowledge of sustainable farming techniques for farming communities 4. Preservation and practice of traditional arts 5. Pride in, and desire to conserve, African environment and culture 6. Role modeling for other schools and online.
