NO FEAR FOR A CHANGE

Luis is studies in Pre-School at the Dreamer Center; this is his first year in school. He is originally from a Village in Antigua Guatemala. He lives with his sister and both parents. From the moment they approached Asociación Nuestros Ahijados, we were able to notice that this family is really poor and in need. After a home visit we were able to know how their living conditions were.

Their house was made of metal sheets and parts of wood, they had a part of the room that they were using the neighbors wall instead of having their own, in order to have a better support for the room; but that wasn’t a safe a secure wall since when it rained all the water came in and the house was very cold what made the family got sick very often.

Based on the house conditions, Asociación Nuestros Ahijados decided to support the family with a housing construction, so that they could improve their quality of life, and they could have a dignified place to live.

Another problem that the family faced was their family situation; parents were constantly fighting and close of harming each other. This physical violence affected the psychological health of Luis and his little sister who also studies in the center Dreamer. Our psychologist detected the problem while a visit to our Atkinson Family Clinics. Immediately we decided to support the parents so that they could be better and the family relationship be harmonious.

The psychological aid took more than a year, after that time the father, who also had problems with alcoholism, had a very remarkable change in his behavior and in the way he treated his wife. The mother has also shown a remarkable change. They also faced the economically problems, currently both parents work to support their family.

But the most important thing is that little Luis doesn’t have to witness how their parents argue and try to attack to each other anymore.

Asociación Nuestros Ahijados have not only changed the way of life of this family, but now, the child and his sister are growing up in a safe environment at home and are completely safe studying ate Dreamer Center, where he and his family are supported with clothes, shoes and vegetables, in addition of receiving a high qualified education to be able to change their lives and have a better future.

A Change for New Life

A CHANGE FOR A NEW LIFE

One of the girls is eight years old and the other is nine. Both sisters study in the second grade at the Dreamer Center. They with their mother and their maternal grandfather. They are originally from Antigua Guatemala and currently live in San Felipe de Jesus. Both girls have an older sister who cares for them while the mother is out working.

The father doesn’t live with them, he abandoned them a few years ago. He was constantly attacking the whole family. He had problems with alcoholism and drug addiction; the girls were very small and witnessed all kinds of physical violence against their mothr and also were victims of him. The mother asked for help from the authorities, who helped her to stop with the aggressions. After that, she decided to move to San Felipe de Jesús to her father’s house, who gave part of his house for her and the girls.

With their new life, the mother had to look for a job to support the needs of the girls. Since the grandfather is very old, he can’t help them financially, he works only at home, he is dedicated to make cloth sacks and he is engaged in sewing in general.

The mother, found a job as a waitress, but did not know what to do with the education of her girls. Even one of them lost an academic degree because of all the emotional problems she had; for this reason she decided to bring them to Asociación Nuestros Ahijados de Guatemala, ONG; where the two young girls were received to study, in addition to that they are receiving psychological therapies, medical control, school supplies and benefits that they need according to their circumstances.

The girls are still shy and fearful, but as time goes by they are more friendly to their classmates and teachers and to receive a comprehensive education that in the future will allow them to be professional women. All traumas lived in their past are being overcome and does not affect their academic development or human interaction with others.

Ruth's Story: From the Streets to the Classroom

Ruth is a sweet 6 year old girl who is in kindergarten at our Dreamer Center school in Antigua, Guatemala. Ruth lives with her mother, father and little brother. Her mother has a physical disability from birth which makes it difficult to find work. Her right leg is much shorter than the left and she only has 3 toes on that foot. Ruth's father worked as a security guard on a truck and one day he was in an accident. He lost control of the truck which then rolled over several times and ended up crashing into the wall along the highway. He was left with both legs fractured and was unable to work for a year.

After the accident Ruth's parents were left without money or any way to earn an income and provide for their family. For a little over a year the family lived on the streets and Ruth's mother begged for money to pay for the medicine and treatments that her husband needed and for food for the children. Although the family knew the importance of education Ruth was also unable to go to school because the family just couldn't afford the school supplies and uniform she would need to attend school.

One day someone told them about The GOD'S CHILD Project and upon hearing their story the Project helped the family with food, clothes, shoes and medical care for the whole family. Ruth was also enrolled in the Dreamer Center school where school supplies, a uniform and two meals a day were provided for her and most importantly she was able to begin her education so that she can better provide for herself and her family when she grows up.

The family is very grateful for the help that The GOD'S CHILD Project has given them. Both of Ruth's parents are now able to sell toys and different products and are able to support their family. Her father has now recovered and although there is some damage to his legs he can walk on his own and continue to work with his wife to provide their children with a better future.
