'No Stereotypes towards Integration'

By Agata Zumaeta | Projecto Leader

CAMPAIGN TO IDENTIFY AND ELIMINATE MYTHS ABOUT REFUGEES AND MIGRANT WOMEN

In Peru, there are 1.5 million refugees and migrants from Venezuela. 58% are women. Prejudice and stereotypes towards migrant women aggravate the situation of gender-based violence to which they are exposed.

Last month the Ministry of Women and Vulnerable Populations (MWVP) in alliance with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) of Peru, and with the support of grassroots organizations such as APPV, created the campaign 'Without Stereotypes towards Integration' with the aim of making visible the stereotypes that Venezuelan refugee and migrant women face, since it is a problem that affects society.

This workshop carried out with Venezuelan refugee and migrant women concluded that the main problem is the stereotypes related to hypersexualization. They mainly affect these women in the areas of health, work and domestic life, limiting their access to rights.

Martha Fernández, migration specialist for AGTR and president of the Vulnerable Population Protection Association (APPV) pointed out that, in the case of Venezuelan migration, the stereotypes of the social imaginary have hypersexualized Venezuelan refugee and migrant women, causing in many cases officials do not believe them deserving of international protection.

“It is urgent to work on a campaign that makes this problem visible and dignifies Venezuelan refugee and migrant women for the simple fact of being a woman,” she stressed.

From AGTR and APPV we continue working so that the voices of refugee and migrant women are heard, so that their rights are respected, because there is only one path and we need to walk it without stereotypes towards integration.

                                                             The key is prevention
