Case Study
Mast. Arun (name changed)
Vijay and Sariga, who worked as farm laborers in the village of Diskal near Satara, originally hailed from Buldhana but had relocated to Diskal in pursuit of livelihood. The couple, parents to two children, including their 10-year-old son Arun, faced a tragic incident on the evening of Jan 4, 2024. Arun, returning home alone from school, was struck by a hit-and-run vehicle, resulting in severe head injuries and loss of consciousness.
Vijay, Sariga, and Arun’s uncle, Nandkishor, promptly rushed him to a private hospital in Satara. Given the gravity of the injuries, they transferred him to Civil Hospital, Satara, and later to Sassoon Hospital on January 5, 2024. Observing no brain reflexes and suspecting brain death, the treating doctors involved Jagdish Borude, a Transplant Coordinator from MOHAN Foundation for counselling the family for organ donation.
On January 6, 2024, the doctors conducted the first set of confirmatory tests for brain death, confirming their suspicions. The heart-breaking news was conveyed to the devastated family. Jagdish, understanding their shock, decided to provide more time before discussing organ donation. Throughout the day, he counselled both the family and concerned villagers who had gathered at the hospital.
On the early morning of January 7, 2024, the second set of confirmatory tests confirmed brain death. Jagdish, with determination, persuaded Arun’s parents and the villagers, leading the family towards the decision of organ donation. Vijay, though overwhelmed with grief, eventually signed the consent form, agreeing to donate Arun's heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, and pancreas.
Due to technical issues, the retrieval of the liver, lungs, and pancreas could not take place. The heart and both kidneys were allocated by ZTCC (Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre), Pune. On January 7, 2024, Arun's heart and kidneys were retrieved in the operating theatre.
The following benefitted from the transplant:
All recipients are reported to be doing well post-transplant, ensuring that Arun lives on through their renewed lives.
