Helping medical students become better doctors

Students from different medical schools share their feedback about our courses:

We are happy to share feedback we recently received from medical students from different schools. Some of them have been provided access to our courses, through The Foundation for Excellence - a not for profit organization that supports bright students from lower economic families to pursue degrees in medicine and other professional courses.

Information Resources & Literature Searching

Faiaz - The course is awesome. At first I couldn't find a way to explore the program. I didn't understand what was going on here. But then I found a lot being taught about knowledge resources. I am very happy. I had no knowledge about medical journals and such resources, earlier.
Sameer - I would like to say - the course was fantastic; it was way beyond my expectations. It was concise and straightforward. It explained new and useful concepts to me in an organized manner. It made my knowledge clear on Information Retrieval and on Searching for Articles.
Thank you very much for this. Your support too is impressive. Kudos to you and your team, and keep up the good work.

Introduction to Referencing:

Kuntal - It tells us how to reference when writing an article. It will be useful in my future course of study.
Shohidul - Very informative and it is useful for future use.

Mastering PubMed:

Shagun - I was very scared of research and the whole process in general. I was recommended this course by Dr. Viraat (Neurosurgeon), and I can say that taking a subscription is the best decision I made.
Kuntal – Very useful and I loved it

Reference Management with Mendeley:

Shagun - I loved every aspect of the course, the way it is simplified and also help received by the organization. A 100/100 experience.
Shohidul – The course duration is not lengthy so it is not boring. It is interesting because after each course there is a quiz and also a certificate that give us energy for participation in the next course.

We would also like to share that we have been working with several teams engaged in research projects for the Lancet Citizens' Commission in India and every team has been really grateful for our teaching and support. One of them mentioned - "If we had started working with you earlier, we may have made lots more progress by now!"

That was a really precious comment.

It just confirms to us that the earlier these skills are picked up, medical research gets better, with lots of time saved. And we are really happy that more undergraduate medical students are learning them soon.

Some experiences while guiding research projects

QMed recently started training and helping health professionals who have volunteered their time for research projects for the Lancet Citizens’ Commission. This research project is being coordinated from CMC Vellore. They have subscribed to QMedCourses. The group is divided into small teams working on various research projects concerning healthcare in India – especially on achieving universal healthcare coverage for people in India in the coming years.

The whole group has been signed up for QMedCourses and we are also working with each team, helping them with their search strategies – for them to search various databases, find all available literature and produce their scoping reviews. It has been wonderful mentoring each team.

Each team has done the requisite lessons in our course, for the advanced searching methods and then shares the search strategy that they create, with us. We comment on the steps and make suggestions. They then make changes and we check it out once more. The groups are very keen on learning and do their best. It is great to see people evolving and learning “structured advanced search techniques”.

We only wish that they had engaged with us still earlier because some of the teams had done search strategies earlier and had to make several revisions. They could have saved a fair amount of time if they had been involved with us from the start. But – better late than never!

For some groups, we also managed to get a little extra help and advice from International and local librarians and other experts. That helped in sourcing additional literature.

Overall – we feel wonderful for being able to make a significant contribution to this project. The skills we have to share are reaching where they are much needed! There are instances where we have pointed out work done that could have led to inadequate results – something that such projects cannot afford to have.

It strengthens our belief that literature searching skills need to be taught right from the Undergraduate medical and health sciences education level. Only then when they are involved in research projects as professionals – they can learn necessary advanced skills more easily and hugely strengthen research outputs. It also is a fact that these skills make a big difference to practitioners – in their abilities to find the best available evidence at any time.

We are working our courses getting into the UG curriculum. We seek everyone’s help and inputs in making this happen...for the health of India! And we believe that this group of researchers will help us by sharing the knowledge they gained and also by spreading the word about our courses.
